Day 22: Cycle to Soysambu


It rained most of the night and we woke up in the clouds. But that is what you get from a montane forest in the wet season!

Setting off down the hill we could see that it had rained.

The track was wet for quite a while but we did get through. Cycling through verdent farming country, stopping for early elevensis with this unfortunate chicken.

We also stopped to get a chapatti to keep for lunch from Brenda here, who waved us merrily on the way. Another of her customers had a pocket full of miraa but we said we would pass on that.
Then down into Soysambu conservancy, where we had an amazing ride by the lake shore alongside the flamingoes. 
This is meant to be a rest day, but we decided that it counted as such because we only went 40km. On the route north again tomorrow!

Technical Corner
We do our washing the old fashioned way, in a bucket.

    That was quite a 'rest' day and I'm glad you were able to wash the mud off in you bucket! A lovely selection of photos too ❤️

    Another wet start! You both show Victorian explorer fortitude heading out in that rainy season! I love your mix of people and nature photos. I should add wildlife - although I’m not sure someone’s chicken lunch qualifies! Superb write up again!

Straight back into crossing the river, which would shave a couple of km off today's walk. Tom's approach to crossing in his walking shoes was replaced by Birkenstocks, with hastily added "heal straps." These were fashioned from the rope we brought to teach Daniel how to tie a bowline, for the sailing leg. The land was undulating, as we walked beneath the Yatta Escarpment, normally see from the distance of the Mombasa Road. We walk in line, at all times. Day 42 Kilifi to Watamu

1st November 2022. Here we are, the sailing. Keeping the best until last. We missed the wind at the beginning of the year and so we are now sailing from South to North instead, hopefully catching the last of the Kusi wind from the South East. We were waved off from the beach by the Fevre family having packed a lot of kit, including 50 litres of water into our boat, The Mousehole Cat. She is a very fine Wayfarer, which is a 16ft dinghy. We set off upwind, as from Kilifi you have to go South East first, to get through the "mlango" or gate in the reef. Then it was bear away, turn left, spinnaker up and head for Watamu, some 25 miles / 40 km away. We are fully covered up for the sun. The wind was gentle and the tuna fish were busy, leaping about amongst the seaguls. Coming in to Watamu Creek was all about preparation: Tom had an exact route to get through the channel on the GPS. Day 38 to Keleswa Lugga

16th of September. Today we left the Ndotos, walking with their north Western tail to our left for most of the day. This was our day "crossing the desert" as Helen described it last night. Dominated by sand and "red acacia," it was our first time of being properly hot - for 22km, getting into camp at 2.45pm. But there were signs of life everywhere. We saw lion prints (maybe the one that took a camel - not ours - in last night's village?). There were numerous middens, which seemed to be used by both dik dik and ardwolf. We also saw aardvark, African wolf (formerly golden jackal), bat eared fox and ostrich spoors. And 3 gerenuk in real life. So there are lots of animals, just hard to see.
